The Chatham County Sheriff Office as well as Savannah-Chatham Metro PD have been receiving calls from concerned citizens who believe someone is trying to scam them. We believe they are probably connected.
The scam starts with a phone call. The caller might tell you that they work with the Magistrate Court and you have been caught on a “red light camera” and there is a warrant for your arrest. To stop this warrant all you have to do is go and get a credit card or green dot card and put a specified dollar amount on it. You have to give them the code on the back of the card, so they can access the money and then the arrest warrant will be stopped.
Several years ago the sheriff’s office was contacted about a similar scam where the caller stated they were a lieutenant with the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office. They told them that if they want to get their loved ones out of jail they needed to put the money on the card, and well you know the rest. This scam was perpetrated in several counties in Georgia and a number of nearby states.
At no time would anyone from the courts call you and advise you to put money on a card in lieu of a warrant, nor would anyone from the CCSO call and ask you to put money on a card to get an inmate out of jail, that is not our procedure.
A red light ticket will come directly to the address on your registration and will have a photograph of your vehicle running the light. To bond someone out of jail you have to pay a bond and sign paperwork. We do not solicit this by phone.
If anyone ever has a question about a ticket received by a SCMPD Officer, please call Savannah Chatham Metro (912-652-3100). For red light tickets call 525-3100 EXT 1570. For information about the Chatham County Jail, please call the CCSO (912-652-7700). We are always happy to answer any questions.
